BALTIMORE — Cult filmmaker John Waters was released Tuesday from the hospital after his car was struck by a van that ran a red light in Timonium.

Waters, 78, was taken to a nearby hospital and examined for chest pain, according to a Baltimore County Police Department report. The driver of the other car, a 25-year-old man, was not injured.

The Baltimore filmmaker said in a statement that he was recuperating from the collision.

“Since it hurts when I laugh I will have no witty answer about being in a car accident that no one has said was my fault,” Waters wrote in a statement. “Hope you understand. I’m released from the hospital and all is ok.”

The crash occurred at 2:40 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Joppa and Falls roads, according to the police report. Waters, who was driving a 2015 Buick LaCrosse, was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, he drove into the intersection and prepared to continue west on Joppa Road.

At that moment, a 2012 Chevrolet cargo van heading north on Falls Road switched from the right lane to the left lane to avoid a tow truck that was stopped at the intersection, according to the police report. The van rammed into the front corner of Waters’ car on the driver’s side.

The van’s driver “admitted to being distracted by the stopped tow vehicle and entering the intersection on a red signal,” the report said.

No citations were issued, and police did not identify the van’s driver.

The crash disabled both cars, and they were towed from the scene.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, police said.
