Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Gigi Hadid were two Met Gala winners

The Met Gala, at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, came and went last Monday in a flurry of enormous gowns, wild accessorizing and some questionable dress-code interpretation. (The theme was “The Garden of Time,” but the Costume Institute exhibit being unveiled was “Sleeping Beauty”; hence some confusion.)
Here are two of my favorites from the night. Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s gloriously dramatic fairy-tale gown (Sleeping Beauty, right? Or maybe Rapunzel?) had some down-to-earth roots: Designed by Zac Posen for Gap — yes, Gap — it’s made entirely of denim. (Why is nothing like this on the racks when I shop at the Gap?)
And Gigi Hadid’s white strapless gown from Thom Browne, which reportedly took more than 13,000 hours to construct, was festooned with beautifully wandering roses — and a whimsical blazer-lapel detail at the hip. It took five dark-suited wranglers to help her get the skirt up the stairs, but hey, fantasy comes at a cost. Just gorgeous.
