(UPI) A Utah Highway Patrol trooper came to the rescue of three dogs spotted running loose on a busy stretch of freeway.

The UHP said the trooper was driving on State Route 201 in Magna, near Salt Lake City, when he spotted three dogs running loose in the road.

The trooper followed the dogs on the road for a time before he and a bystander were able to coax them into his patrol car.

The dogs were taken to Salt Lake County Animal Services, which shared a photo of the three canine scofflaws in the back of the trooper's car.

Animal services officials said in a Facebook post that they are trying to locate the owner or owners of the three dogs.

"As a friendly reminder, it's always important to have a collar with identification tags and a microchip with up-to-date contact information for your furry companions," the post said.
